The Women in Economics Network (WEN) and the Economic Society of Australia (ESA) South Australian branches, together with the Fay Gale Centre for Research on Gender invite you to a special International Women’s Day event on Thursday, 6 March 2025 at the University of Adelaide, followed by ESA (SA) and WEN (SA) Annual General Meeting (AGM).

Women in Economics: Driving Change Across Sectors – International Women’s Day Panel

 

This event will feature a panel of leading Australian female economists from across the public sector, private sector, and academia, sharing their experiences in the profession, the importance of female leadership, and key economic and policy issues.

Panel Speakers:

About the speakers

Shelby Schofield is Chief Economist in the Office for Women at the Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet. She is responsible for supporting economic policy development to advance gender equality, including gender responsive budgeting, workplace gender equality and gender pay, and other policies that support women’s workforce participation. Shelby also represents Australia on the OECD’s Gender Mainstreaming and Governance Bureau, bringing her deep economic and gender policy expertise to the international stage for the advancement of women everywhere.

Shelby has extensive economic and public policy experience, spending a decade in the Commonwealth Treasury working on industry and resource taxation, international economic cooperation, and competition and consumer policy. She has degrees in economics, business administration, and political science. Shelby also has a strong interest in social policy and disability advocacy and was previously Chair of the Board of one of Australia’s largest disability support providers, Sharing Places. She believes in a society where everyone has dignity and is valued. Shelby also works collaboratively with communities on grassroots advocacy through her work with the Weston Creek Community Council. Shelby is a member of the Economics Society of Australia, the Women in Economics Network, and Advocacy for Inclusion.

Nu Nu Win is an Assistant Secretary at the Australian Department of Treasury and a Sir Roland Wilson PhD Scholar, focusing on policy analysis using microdata. She has a broad range of experience across tax policy, legislation, forecasting, and macroeconomic modelling. Nu Nu Win also previously led the BHP’s macroeconomic team in Singapore and worked in the World Bank’s macroeconomic modelling team in Washington, DC.

Associate professor Duygu Yengin is an expert in microeconomic theory and joined the School of Economics and Public Policy at the University of Adelaide after receiving her Ph.D from the University of Rochester in 2007. She has taken roles as Interim and Deputy Head of School and Associate Dean of Diversity and Inclusion. She specializes at using game theory, mathematical economics, bargaining theory, auction and market design, and fair allocation to develop models and solutions for various issues such as land sales, compulsory acquisitions, law and economics, sustainability, trust in negotiations, equitable allocation of resources, and gender economics. She is a co-founder and Research, Resources, and Data Manager of National WEN. She is an active promoter of women in economics and has written in the Conversation, VoxEU, Advertiser, etc. and presented in public talks.

Dr Tania Dey is an Applied Economist working as a Manager at BDO EconSearch, in addition to being a mother of two primary school-aged children. She is currently doing economic analysis in areas such as health care, infrastructure, travel and tourism, migration, etc. Tania has worked as an Economist at the University of Adelaide and as a Regulatory Analyst at the Essential Services Commission of South Australia. She is experienced in macroeconomic issues, energy economics, labour market issues, economic evaluation using impact assessment and cost-benefit analysis, public policy, and regional development. Tania enjoys networking opportunities and looks forward to commenting in media on topical issues. She volunteers her time as a member of the Women in Economics Network (South Australia), as a mentor to budding female economists, and as a producer on Radio Adelaide, promoting community engagement.

 Dr Jacky Southcott is the Co-Chair of WEN SA, and a Senior Economist with the Australian Trade and Investment Commission. She earned her Ph.D. in Economics from the University of Adelaide where her pioneering research on the economics of trust garnered recognition with a Dean's Commendation for Doctoral Thesis Excellence. With a career spanning over two decades, Jacky has extensive experience working across government and academic institutions, both in Australia and overseas. Her expertise lies in conducting economic impact evaluations, applied economic research, and providing advice to Senior Government Officials. Jacky's passion lies in translating economic research for real-world societal impact.
