The Women in Economics Network (WEN), Economic Society of Australia (ESA) and Young Economists Network (YEN) South Australian branches invite you to celebrate International Women’s Day on Thursday 05 March at the Adelaide University with a special keynote by highly respected economic practitioner, media commentator, and keynote speaker Nicki Hutley.

Prior to the keynote presentation, WEN SA will hold its Annual General Meeting (AGM).

International Women’s Day Special Keynote Presentation by Nicki Hutley

Nicki will explore women’s economic progress and barriers through the lens of her own career experiences as an economist. She will also reflect on areas for reform, both in the policy space and more broadly. The keynote will be followed by a Q&A session with the audience.

Audience members are welcome to submit questions in advance by emailing Dr Jacky Southcott at jacky.southcott@gmail.com.

Time: 5:30pm-7.30pm (arrival from 5.30pm; keynote commences at 5:45 pm). Light refreshments will be provided.

Venue: Adelaide University, 259 North Terrace, Napier Building, Lecture Theatre G04.

Cost: Free for members and students. $15 for non-members. Students may register for free by emailing Farhana Abedin (Farhana.d.abedin@gmail.com) with proof of a valid current student ID.


Meet the speaker:

 

Nicki Hutley

Nicki Hutley is a highly respected economic practitioner and keynote speaker. Over her career, she has worked in financial and investment markets, and as a consultant helping to develop robust economic policy in a range of fields. She focusses on climate change and the Net Zero transition in particular, and the intersection of environment, society and economy more broadly.

After many years in the corporate world, Nicki established her own economic consulting practice in 2021 and now advises governments, businesses and not-for-profits on a range of policy issues. Nicki is also Chief Economic Adviser to the Customer-Owned Banking Association, a Councillor on the Climate Council, and a member of the Financy Women’s Index Advisory Committee, which reports on women’s economic progress. 

Nicki is a member of the Australian Business Economists’ executive committee and a past president of the Economics Society of Australia (NSW).

Nicki is a frequent commentator across the media, and a regular opinion writer for the Guardian.

Elections for WEN SA Committee positions will take place at the AGM. This is a great opportunity to contribute to the economics community, support initiatives that promote diversity in the profession, and help shape future events and activities.

The WEN SA Committee focuses on improving the representation of women in economics, highlighting the contributions of female economists, and encouraging young women to study economics.

If you would like to join the WEN SA Committee, please complete the attached Nomination Form and email it to Dr. Jacky Southcott at jackysouthcott@gmail.com by Thursday 26 February.

Digital signatures and scanned copies of nomination forms are accepted.

Governance arrangements for WEN SA can be found here. Positions may proceed to a vote in accordance with these arrangements.
