Student Event: Q&A session with Guy Debelle, the Deputy Governor of Reserve Bank of Australia

The Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) is Australia's central bank and its duty is to contribute to the stability of the currency, full employment, and the economic prosperity and welfare of the Australian people. It does this by setting the cash rate to meet an agreed medium-term inflation target, working to maintain a strong financial system and efficient payments system, and issuing the nation's banknotes.


This role is especially important in today’s uncertain banking environment. Guy Debelle started his career with an honours degree in economics from The University of Adelaide, and jobs at the International Monetary Fund, Bank for International Settlements, Australian Treasury and as a visiting professor in economics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).

Deregulation and reform of the electricity market in Australia: Lessons for Japan?

The Japanese Government began to reform the Japanese electricity market in 2016, some 25 years after Paul Keating kicked off Australia’s energy reform. The Australian process opened up generation, network and retail from being a purely government operated sector. This saw an increase in private investment and the integration of State-based grids.

The speaker Felix Karmel examines the various parts of the Australian Energy sector. It looks at the history of the National Electricity Market and how the reform process has proceeded. From this five lessons from the Australian experience are drawn.
